The Pros and Cons of Homework

Homework is a big thing in school, people from elementary all the way to highschool receive it. But is homework really beneficial, is it necessary? A lot of people have different opinions on homework these days and today I’m going to be talking about the pros and cons of homework. Let’s begin!

First let’s start with a pro! A positive thing about homework is that it increases the likelihood of attending college. Many studies show that homework increases the achievements of students, for example grades. According to High School Journal students who spend 30 minutes or an hour on homework score higher than their peers. According to IZA, homework helps students have better GPAs and the probability of attending college. Another pro is that parents can get involved with their child’s learning. When assignments are taken home parents can see what their child is learning and what their child is weak at for a subject. Parents even note that they didn’t know their child has a learning disability until homework was taken home! Our last pro is that it teaches time management. Homework helps students plan their time in order to complete all their assignments on time. Practicing time management is a key skill in life that also helps with independent thinking!

Okay, now here are some cons. Doing too much homework causes students to stress which eventually leads to health problems.  According to Alfie Kohn who is both an education and parenting expert states “Kids should have a chance to just be kids and do things they enjoy, particularly after spending six hours a day in school. After all, we adults need time just to chill out, it’s absurd to insist that children must be engaged in constructive activities right up until their heads hit the pillow.”  Homework also increases the likelihood to cheat. Kids of all ages around the world admit copying off someone else's paper, and asking their parents to complete their assignments. Another con is that students with low income students struggle with homework a lot. These students have less access to requirements to what’s needed to complete the homework assignments. Requirements such as internet access, pens, paper or parents unable to help them. Students are also busy, such as attending their hobbies, taking care of their siblings, part time jobs, etc that takes time off their homework.

As you can see homework both has it’s pros and cons. Hopefully this blog changes anyone’s opinion on homework. Homework could be harmful and dangerous, but also helpful! That’s it from me!
